Unit 5: Prove your point

Activity 1: "How much do you know about this topic?"

Content

Writing a series of paragraphs expressing an opinion can seem like a daunting task, however it doesn’t have to be. If you know the process and understand what you are expected to do, writing an opinion piece – believe it or not – can be simple and even fun.

The task of writing a series of opinion paragraphs is a good way to stimulate learning, communication at all levels, and critical thinking.

This form of writing is very empowering since you can explore and write on an issue you are passionate about and then persuade and convince your readers to alter their knowledge, thoughts, feelings or even actions.

In this activity, you will read a series of paragraphs expressing an opinion and then answer questions to identify the features of an opinion piece in that selected reading. The purpose of this activity is for you to demonstrate how much prior knowledge you have of opinion pieces and which areas you need to review and learn before actually delving into the writing process.
