Here are a few things to review before starting your Summative assessment task
UNIQUE GENRE:
For the Newspaper Article, you will only use the facts. Remember the uniqueness of this genre, as mentioned in the preceding lessons. It is different in terms of the graphical and narrative texts. Here are two points to keep in mind:
- Writing a newspaper article is an example of expository writing. Newspaper articles require a different style of writing from what is used when writing a story.
- Newspaper reporters are careful not to show their personal feelings, but instead, report as accurately as possible the facts of an event. But, even though writing for the newspaper is factual, it should not sound boring. The article should still be interesting to the reader. Otherwise, no one will read the article.
CHECK LIST WHEN WRITING:
Here's a quick "check list" on how to write a Newspaper Article:
- The headline should be accurate and in the present tense.
- The first sentence needs to be short and dramatic. Surprise your reader! Make them curious.
- Be clear from the start – put the facts of the story first.
- Remember to use the 5 W’s – who is involved; what happened; when did it happen; where and, most important, why?
- Be accurate - get your facts correct.
- Use active verbs wherever possible.
- Keep the article brief – don’t bore your reader and don’t make it too complicated to understand. Be incisive.
- Be fair – there are at least two sides to every story. Let the readers make up their own minds.
- Avoid clichés – find new ways to describe familiar people and events.
- Search for a special ingredient – make your story stand out from the others
And, remember, you can always revisit the exemplar used in Activities 1 to 5.
